This just goes to show you how abstract and interesting the Internet can be. I did a Google search on the keyword “why” and I found Scott Berkun a best-selling author and kick-ass speaker. He writes books and essays, lectures at Fortune 500 companies & top universities on creativity, management and a fun mix of everything else. It was late at night and I started his video lecture on innovation he did at Carnegie Mellon University. He went into several Innovation Success Stories and really dove into the real stories behind these successes.

The real stories were about failure, the desire to solve a problem and to keep trying new and innovate ways to get to the end result. One of the quotes he pulled out was a quote that is from the CEO of 3-M.

“As our business grows, it becomes increasingly necessary to delegate responsibility and to encourage men and women to exercise their initiative. This requires considerable tolerance. Those men and women, to whom we delegate authority and responsibility, if they are good people, are going to want to do their jobs in their own way.

Mistakes will be made. But if a person is essentially right, the mistakes he or she makes are not as serious in the long run as the mistakes management will make if it undertakes to tell those in authority exactly how they must do their jobs.

Management that is destructively critical when mistakes are made kills initiative. And it’s essential that we have many people with initiative if we are to continue to grow.”

We see progressive companies like Google allowing their employees to work on other projects 20% of the time. If there is success it might become another Google product. There are probably many other companies using this same philosophy. I think it is a great culture to embrace and the results can be enormous. So next time you feel like taking a risk, take it it might be the best thing I/you/we ever did!

This meeting was a Jerry Falwell event, but don’t pay a lot o0f attention to him because the message in Art Williams speech is powerful. If your day is not going as expected and you want a “little pick me up” this just might do the trick. Powerful speech by Art Williams.

Learn from a average guy who made it really big, over $100 Billion big in 10 years. Art Williams talks about it, he says JUST DO IT. Harv Ecker talks about it. (Harv says if you have broken leg show up to work, and he is right, I know a guy how had a broken leg and was just starting out his drains business and he could not afford to tak a day off, today it is a successful small business).

Steps to being successful in business

1) Get excited

2) Have a dream

3) Gotta stand for something

4) Be controversial

5) Total commitment

6) Treat people good, make them feel special, we all want to feel that way

7) Have the desire and will to win

Be a leader

9) Do whatever it takes to get the job done

10) Just do it

Interview with Ph.D. Psychologist PPC Adwords Guy

I recently did an interview with Glenn Livingston (check out part 3) to talk about PPC or Google Adwords. One thing Glenn “gets” is people and their behavior. To make money online many people jump right in before they are properly prepared. You know that to be a rocket scientist, a doctor, a brick layer, a construction worker, an office worker, a teacher there are prerequisites, things you must learn, before you can be successful, you don’t just jump right in unprepared.

The same applies to the Internet marketing industry even though there are unsavory people out there who’d have you believe it’s a “Walk in the Park” and requires no more than the belief that you can just do it.

And I’ll have to admit, it is a walk in the park compared to what you have to put up with in the working world punching a clock being a subordinate to someone who does not have your interests in mind, but there are still rules you have to follow and pitfalls you must avoid to actually make Internet marketing work for you.

Most people will not make a dime online and yet there are others who will make more in one month than most people make in a whole year. Why is that?

My answer begins with the age-old chicken or egg question, “what comes first the chicken or the egg”? Personally I vote for, well never mind, each argument you or I make comes back to the same old conclusion – I have no clue and I don’t think many of us do either.

But one thing I do have a clue about and know for sure is that to make money online you must first have Passion for the company products and/or service of any Internet business from which you expect to make money.

Passion in this sense simply means that you’ve researched and like the company and products or services. It is then that you translate that like (or Passion) into the education, excitement and work that usually accompany Passion.

I will have to say that many online entrepreneurs are so good at what they do that they ignore passion because they can sell anything. But I’m concerned about those of you who are not so knowledgeable at working an online business successfully.

Now, I’m not trying to make anyone believe that Passion is the only thing necessary. Because to be successful you must also have a good website, good marketing, widespread advertising, company support, effective keywords, and etc. Those things are often learned from the company you join – but sidestep Passion and you reduce your chances for success dramatically.

It therefore follows that, if you have no Passion for the company and the products and services provided by that company, again, you won’t attempt to do the work you are being taught.

Internet marketing work is typically not all that difficult or time consuming but it does take motivation caused by Passion to get you off and running with a sustained effort so that you won’t stumble.

You have a great resource in the Internet search engines to search about the Internet Marketing industry for business opportunities, USE IT!

Your research should uncover a company that you like and have confidence in. It should be solid, founded on great principles, and easy to understand with great products and services that are sell-able for which you can have Passion. If you don’t find it move on,
You can find the right opportunity containing the attributes identified above.

Comments like, well, that one sounds good and the compensation plan is excellent so I guess I’ll start that business – does not sound like a decision based on anything near Passion. And remember when you hear that an Internet “guru” does that, don’t be tempted, because as I said earlier they are experienced and can sell just about anything, without being Passionate about the company products and services.

Note: By the way it’s your goal to get to the point where you can sell about anything online. That end skill and goal is a worthy one indeed.

Remember, there are other steps you must make before you step into Internet Marketing but if you don’t first find the right company products and services to be passionate about, all of those other steps may just cause you a lot of frustration instead of bringing you great success.

Not being Passionate about a company and products and services that has market proof that it will sell is a pitfall you simply must avoid.

Interview Dr. Ivan Misner Business Networking International (BNI)

In this interview with Dr. Ivan Misner worlds #1 networker. Have you ever heard of BNI? (Business Networking International). BNI is the Facebook and MySpace of Business networking, as a matter of fact they have over 5,000 business networking meetings per week

I knew that once I landed the interview with the world’s #1 networker Dr. Ivan Misner I felt that he might be able to share some real tidbits for success and he does not disappoint. He is a passionate man about networking and about helping people. We covered a lot of ground in this interview including Dr. Misners’ new book The 29% Solution which can also be found at 29percentsolution.com. He will teach you a 52 week networking strategy in the book.

What I really enjoyed about meeting Ivan is his authenticity and his willingness to share and not hold anything back. He felt like a long lost friend sharing intimate details and keys to success including his meetings with Sir. Richard Branson and he shares the tips that Branson taught him. He goes into detail on how Branson treats everyone with respect no matter their background or income. Misner also talks about his experience in visiting Branson’s Space Port in the Mohave.

Most full time college professors who teach business have never been in business, unlike professors of medicine who are actual doctors who teach medicine, same is true for law professors who are real lawyers, but not so for business professors. This information is coming from a “professor,” Dr. Misner. The point here is that networking is not taught in schools but it is taught by Misner and BNI.

“Success is the uncommon application and commitment of common knowledge,” says Misner. We all know what it takes to be successful, passion, vision, hard work, luck etc, but we have to apply the uncommon application in order to be a success.

Amazing and GREAT Success Story!

This is a riveting interview. I met Mark Anthony Garrett through Youtube. I went to his site to check him out and I saw that he was raised in foster care. This immediately peeked my interest and I had to get to know this guy and his story, because I knew he had a just a few more challenges than the rest of us. I also knew without meeting him he had a great attitude, life has thrown a lot of obstacles at Mark Anthony and he will discuss how he grows through those obstacles vs. goes through the obstacles.

In this interview with Mark Anthony Garrett he talks about life and his life. He is authentic, vulnerable, well spoken, clear with his message and someone who is making a difference on a daily basis to hundreds if not thousands of lives. He has a story and now the experience we can all learn from.

Let’s touch on some of the highlights: His mom was a prostitute, he came into foster care as an infant. He was adopted at seven years old then he was sexually abused. He was in and out of gangs and he was in drugs. He contemplated suicide. He talks about how he made the choice not to commit suicide with the gun at his head and the help of a friend. All the while he had mentors who got through to him. Now Mark Anthony is giving back that mentorship wisdom to others, especially kids in foster care.

Mark Anthony Garrett walks the walk and talks the talk. I look forward to learning more of the valuable lessons he has to teach. He is living proof that no obstacle can’t be overcome.

Richard Laermer the author of Trendspotting and Punk Marketing joined me for an interview on My Success Gateway. What do you get a when you put a PR guy together with a consultant and small business owner? A lot of talking and a lot of fun.
